Let’s stop a moment and talk about inspiration. It’s well and fine to know about supplies and color theory and creating quick backgrounds, but where are we going with all of this? How do we put together finished pages? How do we decide on a theme? Where do we get ideas from?
The one answer to all these questions: Pinterest
Just in case you’re still in the dark about Pinterest, it’s a photo sharing website that works as a catalog of ideas that inspires users to “go out and do that thing”. If you aren’t on it already, I’d suggest that you hurry over pronto, register for an account, and be ready to be amazed!
Anyhoo, back to art journaling.
Head over to Pinterest and follow my board on Art Journal Layout ideas for a curated, regularly updated collection of lovely art journal spreads and images that can be used to help with composing a lovely page. They range in style from simple to complex, whimsical to doodled and collaged. You’re sure to find something there to fire your imagination.
As a note, these are not meant to be copied and reproduced exactly, though when you’re starting out, you can certainly do that. Rather, I would encourage you to look at the images and see what excites you – is it the color palette, the layout, the drawing, the overall composition? For today, why don’t you focus on experimenting with that element in various ways in your art journal.
It would also be a good idea to start off some of your own Pinterest boards to inspire you on your journey. A few suggestions for your boards:

Art journal techniques – Techniques, videos, art journal lessons can all be housed here.
Color inspiration – Pin ready made color palettes so you’re never stumped for color choices again.
Technique boards – Consider setting up separate boards for specific techniques you may want to explore. For example, you can look at {and follow} my doodling and drawing faces boards for pins focused exclusively on these two subjects.

I don’t have much in the way of artistic skills. But I’m coachable! I recently acquired a copy of The Doodle Revolution by Sunni Brown. I’ve taken it to heart and try to remind my left brain self to give the right brain a chance. Although I don’t have art skills, I know what I like when I see it, and I find Pinterest invaluable for that. As you recommend, I set up a board and plop things there so I can compare them with each other before I decide what I want. For example I set up private boards for book cover design and pin other book covers or regular images with color schemes or whatever, then share it with the designer to give them an idea of what I’m shooting for. Ditto for branding – this year I hope to develop a more cohesive brand, meaning logo, color schemes, fonts, and so forth. Pinterest is wonderful for this type of visual brainstorming.
Yes, it is invaluable for visual brainstorming and an excellent tool to leverage to design book covers, redesign a website, get tons of eye candy!
