The Journey of a Seeker

The journey of a seeker - notes from my spiritual journey

I’ve been a seeker on the spiritual path since as long as I can remember….

Why am I here?

What is my purpose?

What is the meaning of life?

These were just a few of the questions that plagued me as a teenager.

And as I searched for the answers, I became an eternal seeker.

From Conversations with God to the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, from Osho to Abraham Hicks, my quest for answers led me on a merry chase to try and understand the deeper meaning of life. In search of a teacher, I wandered between a myriad spiritual courses – Art of Living, Pyramid healing, Serenity Surrender, Nichiren Buddhism – but none made a lasting impression. And still, my questions remained.

Over the years, they slowly faded to the background. But I would often think that there was surely more to the human experience than the certainties of birth, death, and taxes. That we are not meant to simply run a never ending race for success and the accumulation of wealth. Marriage and children cannot be our only purpose, either.

All of these are, after a while, hollow. So what is it that will make us feel whole and complete? What is the missing ingredient that we are seeking?

I found my answers in a variety of places. Books appeared when I needed them most. I found some beautiful, wise souls online. But what really helped me find my answers was my own connection with myself. As my inner connection became stronger, I bloomed. And as I started to get more grounded, I started to find a more lasting sense of peace permeating through my life. Meditation and music played a huge role in this process for me, as did writing and morning pages.

Through this monthly series, I hope to share some of the lessons I learnt and some of the wisdom I gained – and continue to gain – along the way with you.

  1. Marriage and children cannot be our only purpose – DEFINITELY!

There is so much more to life. While I’m a seeker, I don’t read up things or try to find someone who can help me find what I seek. Through life and daily routine, I’m seeking happiness. As small as it can be, it still matters.

Hopefully some day, I’ll look within me and find myself.

    • Yes, there is! And still, so many people just go through life on default mode, not stopping and thinking and deciding things for themselves.

For me, finding my teacher was a very organic process. I started going to her for the weekly meditation sessions, which brought about a huge shift for me. Just talking to her afterwards opened up so many doorways in my mind!

And yes – this journey is one of looking within. The answers are there, you just need the wisdom to find them. 🙂

  2. I am a seeker, a little lost on my journey feeling hopeless at times because of my current job. I read this post and related to so much of what you’ve written. Thank you for sharing the link to your mentor.

    • I know that feeling so well, of feeling lost and hopeless. I hope you find some answers on her website. I think parts of it are getting updated, so do check back in again after a few days in case some of the links don’t work. 🙂

  3. We’re all seekers of these truths. Sometimes people give up on the quest and at other times people keep searching. I believe it is a never ending quest although eventually we do begin to understand the meaning of it all bit by bit. Thanks for sharing this. 🙂

    • Yes, it is a journey, and a quest. Sometimes the answers come quickly, sometimes they take time. Sometimes we even resist the answers. But I do believe we have to keep on walking!

  4. I’m a constant seeker… always curious and searching for something…. I’ve dabbled in lots of different religions and traveled down a few spiritual paths. Ultimately I’ve decided I don’t fit any boxes exactly, I’m a bit like a square peg in an almost square hole no matter what I try. Sometimes I’m a square peg in a very round hole. So, in the end, I’ve decided I’m a mixture of various things, and I get to choose exactly who I am and what I believe even if it doesn’t fit any other points of view exactly. I make my own way! A mentor or someone to help discover new pieces of myself is always a wonderful thing though. Will check out your mentor’s website. Thanks , Shinjini. x

    • I can so relate to this! I’ve been the same way – dabbled with a few religions, tried a few different spiritual paths, and never quite fit in with any of them. What I found with my mentor is the path to myself…through meditation. I found in her someone who is compassionate, loving, and wise…who walks with you as a guide, rather than prescribing one way to nirvana! Here’s to constant seeking! 🙂

  5. These very same questions have plagued me for long (and surprisingly, I even mentioned it in the post I wrote earlier today). I’ll keep an eye out on this series. I know I’m seeking something, but I don’t know what it is. Hopefully your series will help me find that out.

  6. I spent a lot of time in my twenties lost in who I was. I’ve found a lot of wisdom and a being at peace with myself as I age. I think though I could definitely do with something like meditation, and like I am always meaning to do, a gratitude journal.

    • Being at peace is the key, isn’t it? I’ve found that with meditation, it really helped me to connect with the silence within and be more at peace with myself and the world. A gratitude journal helps, too, though I never manage to stick with it for too long! Do try out the meditations on the website I shared; I hope you find them as powerful as I did. 🙂

  7. “But I would often think that there was surely more to the human experience than the certainties of birth, death, and taxes. ” These lines are so true.

There is much more than just living the daily life. I am still searching my own answers. Will go through the series for sure.
