August 2019: Tarot spread for the new moon in Virgo

Tarot spread for the August 2019 new moon in Virgo

The August 2019 new moon falls in the sign of Virgo. The Virgo archetype is logical and practical, with an eye for detail and the steadfastness to go after their goals. This is a sign that thrives on meticulous planning, on honing skills to perfection and gaining mastery over their chosen vocation.

Spiritually, the Virgo archetype teaches the principle of devotion. One way to understand this principle is by looking at it through the lens of one’s devotion to their craft. While all the buzz seems to point towards profiting from your passion, there are numerous examples of famous writers and artists who held down a day job for most of their lives. Franz Kafka was an insurance clerk, Harper Lee was an airline ticketing agent, Mark Rothko was an elementary school teacher and Paul Gauguin was a stockbroker. They could all have given in to the dull drudgery of making a living, but they didn’t – and the world is much richer for their devotion to their craft.

The August 2019 new moon highlights the stagnant and stuck places, and supports us to let go of the things that no longer serve. This Virgo moon is a good time to put some elbow grease behind your goals and to chart a path towards the attainment of those goals.

Astro-Tarot influences for the August new moon

To throw some more light on the August new moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation.

The Virgo new moon falls in decan 1, which is represented by the 8 of Pentacles. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Hermit, which is associated with Virgo.

This, then, speaks of highly focused, single-minded devotion towards your chosen vocation or goal. The dedication of the figure on the 8 of Pentacles, combined with the inward and solitary energy of The Hermit can speak to a time of pulling away from all external distractions to give our complete attention and devotion to the goal that is burning brightest in our heart. The Hermit also represents pulling away from society to find our own personal truth. How we can bring that to bear on our goal is another aspect this Virgo new moon asks us to consider. This is strong, focused energy that would be best directed towards your heart’s work. It’s the energy of flow – of forgetting everything else as you lose yourself in the work that you are creating.

Journaling questions for the Virgo new moon

Not a cardslinger? No problem! Here are some questions to reflect on instead:

1. As 2019 is coming to a close, what is the one goal that I really want to achieve before the year is out?

2. Why is this goal important to me? Finding your why gives you the fuel to work towards your goal.

3. Set 4 related mini-goals for yourself – one for each remaining month of the year.

4. Think you don’t have time to devote to your goal? Make a time tracker and log your activities for a week. What can you eliminate – social media time, hours spent on Netflix – or repurpose – use your commute time more productively.

5. Give yourself four small rewards for each mini-goal – if that helps you to stick to them. {It doesn’t work for me, personally, but I know a lot of people who swear by this tactic!}

Working with the moon

The new moon is when we set intentions for the moon cycle. It’s a way to focus on a particular goal or desire from one new moon to the next. I have found this to be a very effective way to get things done and to achieve my desires. Of course, there have been cycles when I have slacked, but working with cyclical time gives me a gentler perspective when it comes to achieving my desires.

This blog post details my new moon ritual and how I work with the new moon cycle:
