March 2020: Tarot spread for the new moon in Aries

Tarot spread for the March 2020 new moon in Aries

The March 2020 new moon falls in the sign of Aries. The Aries archetype is known for its bold – often rash – action, for going where angels fear to tread. As the first sign of the zodiac, it represents the active core of our spiritual journey on earth, and teaches us to act in accordance with our ideals. The Aries archetype teaches us to be unafraid to march to our own drumbeat, to assert our willpower towards the attainment of our desires, and to embrace beginner’s mind and the innate trust and explosive power {conviction + action} that is needed to start something new.

Spiritually, the Aries archetype teaches us about action. And as most of us know, it’s easier to talk about the things we want to do than to put in the work and actually do the thing! Aries teaches us that courage is the key to unlocking the full potential of this spiritual principle. And that comes from connecting your head to your heart, focusing your will, and taking consistent action towards your dreams.

The March 2020 new moon highlights changes, conscious magic and mysticism. This Aries new moon ushers in a period of transformation, bringing to the surface the things or attitudes that we need to shed in order to evolve. This letting go can be painful, but it is the only way we can invite in something new.

The Aries new moon also stirs up a desire to understand why things happen the way they do, which ultimately is helpful when we are shedding our old skin and stepping into something new.

Given that this is happening under the impulsive Aries moon, it would behoove us to take some time to think before we leap.

Astro-tarot influences for the March 2020 new moon

To throw some more light on the astrology of the new moon in Aries, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Aries new moon falls in decan 1, which is represented by the 2 of Wands. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Emperor, which is associated with Aries.

The 2 of Wands represents a burning desire for change. Although things may seem calm and stable on the surface, there’s a longing to shake up the status-quo. This could result in either calm and measured decision taking, a seemingly sudden decision that has actually been brewing within since a while, or knee-jerk decision making that may not be thought through at all. The Emperor represents leadership and clarity of vision; as well as worldly knowledge and wisdom gained from experience. It also represents a time to take charge of your life and wield your personal power and authority.

This, then, speaks quite eloquently to the theme of making a bold change. The invitation here is to look at any areas that feel particularly stagnant and in need of a refresh, and to use the fiery Aries energy to bust through the barriers that are holding you back.

The problem here is the tendency we have for maintaining the status quo. Better the devil you know than the one you don’t, is the conventional wisdom. And while there are times when this may make sense, more often than not, this attitude only leads to stuckness and stagnation.

There are times when life forces change upon us – we may lose our job, our children may leave home to go to college far away, an illness may force us to adopt new lifestyle choices – and then we have no choice but to adapt to our new circumstances.

The times when we need to initiate big changes, though, can be fraught with fear. We may know in our bones that it is time to make a particular change, but our fears will raise their hydra heads and list out all the reasons why this change would be a very bad and ill-considered move.

So how can we break out of this cycle of fear? The Aries archetype and the Emperor provide some clues.

When I consider the Aries archetype, I think of spontaneity, a devil-may-care attitude, and an innate belief in the adage “leap and the net will appear”. This is the archetype that believes in acting first and thinking later.

The Emperor brings some focus and restraint to this explosive energy. This archetype knows exactly what it wants and is not afraid to do what needs to be done to go after it. Even when fear raises its head {as it always does}, the Emperor is confident in her/his personal power and can exercise his/her will to get things done.

The template this offers us is to trust what it is that we know in our bones, and when we start to second guess ourselves, to dissect our fears logically and rationally. This is the step a lot of us miss out on. Instead, we go down a fear spiral and manage to talk ourselves out of disrupting the status quo, without even realizing that most of our fears would wither and fade away if we just address them logically and dispassionately. And for any fears that do remain, we can more often than not find solutions when we adopt a more constructive approach to problem solving.

I do want to acknowledge that sometimes our fears can trigger trauma responses and anxiety. In those cases, it is important to reach out to your therapist and to look after yourself in whatever way works best for you.

Sabian Symbol for the March 2020 Aries new moon

The Sabian Symbol for Aries 4 degrees is A White Triangle Is Seen; It Has Golden Wings.

For some reason, this symbol immediately conjures up images of angels, which makes me think of our spiritual lives, and of our ability to look for new perspectives and expand our awareness.

A spiritual quest is usually undertaken in some shape or form when we are on a journey of self-discovery. This journey happens while we are firmly in the throes of our lives – we don’t have to escape reality and retreat to a cabin in the hills to improve ourselves or our relationship with our creator. Rather, it is as we navigate through everything that life throws our way that we grow in both our personal and our spiritual power.

The triangle itself represents stability and power, but when it is pointed downwards, it becomes unstable. This highlights the inherent vulnerability of this symbol, too. While there is the capacity for spiritual expansion and personal growth, there’s also the inherent capacity for spiritual bypassing and an unwillingness to change, which will only keeps us firmly stuck right where we are.
