Grab your art journal, pull out some of your favourite paints, and come join me as I show you how to create an intuitive figurative mixed media art journal page!
I started this page with some burnt umber acrylic paint, because the husband mixed up a much larger batch for his project, and you can’t let good paint go to waste, right?
I started the page without any ideas or agenda. In fact, this is the first time that I really used raw umber, and I have to say that I love it much more than raw sienna.
As is usual with intuitive painting, one thing led to the next and the next and the next, until I ended up with the page that you will see in the video below.

Do I love it? Well, not really. It has its interesting bits and there are parts of it that I’m not too thrilled with. But, it’s just paint in my journal!
I did learn a lot through this process, and I can always come back and re-work or paint over this page if I feel like it.
Nothing that you do in an art journal is ever a waste or a mistake. In fact, I think that painting in an art journal is the perfect way to explore, experiment, and allow yourself to play and try new things!
