Tarot spread for the March 2021 new moon in Pisces

The March 2021 new moon falls in the sign of Pisces. The Pisces archetype is highly intuitive and very open to the flow of creative imagination. This is the sign of creative dreamers and mystics and visionaries, which makes this new moon an excellent time to flex your intuitive and creative muscles.

Spiritually, the Pisces archetype teaches the principle of unity, of recognizing the divinity within you. One way to understand this principle is by looking at creation – the creator {God, Universe, Source, however you wish to name it} created this earth, the rivers and seas, the trees, birds, insects, animals, man. Similarly, man has the ability to create – and to create consciously. It is this ability that points to the spiritual truth of Pisces, that we are spiritual beings having a human experience {with the emphasis on our humanness in all its frailty and beauty}. It is by accepting responsibility for consciously creating – which isn’t always easy – that you connect most deeply with the creator. Needless to say, empathy and compassion are the cornerstones of the Pisces archetype.

This new moon can also usher in a new cycle of change, encouraging us to release old patterns, blocks, and goals that may be going nowhere. That is the only way to let in some fresh energy and vitality – and this new moon definitely encourages that. What excites you? What feels vital and juicy at this time? Focus on that, letting anything that is holding you back from following those clues fall away to the wayside.

Astro-tarot influences for the March 2021 new moon

To throw some more light on the March new moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Pisces new moon falls in decan 3, which is represented by the Ten of Cups. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Moon, which is associated with Pisces.

The 10 of Cups represents a time of peace and prosperity; of things humming along beautifully; of gratitude and abundance; balance and inner happiness. The 10s also represent completion, which ties in to the broader theme of this Pisces new moon. The Moon rules our imagination, which can be both a wonderful and a terrible thing. The imagination is where we weave our beautiful dreams; the imagination is also fertile ground for our festering fears. The Moon is also mystery and magic; it’s the cycle of birth and death and re-birth; and a visual reminder of cyclical time.

This, then, points to a period of peace ahead of an upcoming cycle of change. I don’t know about you, but I’ve spent most of last month feeling overwhelmed, like the world was just “too much”. There was nothing happening in my life that should have caused the overwhelm. From the outside looking in, things were smooth sailing – I was creating art almost every day, reading, writing, journaling, working from home {which I’ve taken to like a duck to water}. And yet, there was that feeling of wanting to shut everything out and still feeling overwhelmed with it all.

Looking at these cards, I wonder if it was the storm before the calm that heralds a change? In the last few days, that overwhelm has started to settle, and I’ve been noticing little a-ha moments – new information appearing in my consciousness, fresh ideas taking seed.

Perhaps that is what this cycle – and these cards – indicate.

A change in the status quo. The start of a new cycle of growth. But before anything new can grow, the old must be cleared out. Just as the farmers must remove the stubble immediately after harvest to prepare the soil for the next sowing season, we need to grapple with our fears and anxieties every time we do something that we think may cause some upheaval in our well-ordered lives.

Yet, without change there is only stagnation, and that leads to its own set of problems – an underlying dissatisfaction and staleness that begins to creep in to our lives. A lot of people choose to numb out, turning to retail therapy or binge-watching Netflix as a way to ignore their emotions. And while there’s nothing wrong with either of these sometimes, there comes a point when it becomes an escape route from having to examine your life – and only you can judge when or if that happens, and then gently course correct as needed.

There are a couple of layers to this symbol, and one that particularly stands out to me at this time. The tiny island that seems lost in the ocean feels like a metaphor for your life vs the world out there. When we tune in to the news or log on to social media, we hear of the many injustices playing out in our state, country and in the wider world. It can feel like the world is sitting on a powder keg waiting to explode – and for some that is the case. There’s no denying that.

There is also the truth that your home and your experiences and your local community is what shapes your lived reality. Your challenges and your blessings are different from what is playing out on the global stage. This doesn’t mean that you ignore the injustices; it’s just a reminder to also remember to focus on your life and to breathe into your lived reality. Our individual lives and communities are tiny islands in the ocean of this world. When we forget that, when we think we live in the ocean and not on the island, it’s easier for us to feel like we’re drowning with no lifeline in sight.

There’s also an inherent reminder of the world out there vs. the world in here – of the ideas and concepts that are marketed to us vs. the ones that really are in alignment with us. And to find the ideas that are in alignment with us, we need to be a bit like an island – to remember that the ocean currents are wide, while land mass is deep. Instead of stretching ourselves too thin, it’s a reminder to go deeper, to find our own centre and to release the distractions that can so easily pull us in multiple directions.
