The March 2021 full moon falls in the sign of Libra. The Libra archetype is closely associated with justice and maintaining balance in social interactions and within the self. They are the true diplomats among the zodiac archetypes, and focus on fair dealings in all their relationships.
Spiritually, the Libra archetype teaches the principle of intimate balance, of the ability to remain centered and true to yourself no matter what may be going on around you. This is a skill that can be particularly helpful for those of us who turn up our noses at societal expectations as we dance to the tune of our own drum beat. Being able to remain centered is also an important skill to have if you’re surrounded by toxic people – and in these times, even toxic politics! One of the easiest ways to remain centered is through the breath, and by being able to distinguish between the things that are in your control, and those that aren’t.
This full moon also highlights our standing in the world, and with it, our personal power. It also lights up our role in society and the ways in which we contribute to the world. Some of us contribute in big and beautiful ways – through social activism, teaching, sharing of wisdom and knowledge – others in gentle, smaller ways – among our families and communities. Both ways of being in the world are valid.
This Libra full moon also asks us to take a closer look at our vocation, and to see if we are in right relationship with it. To ask ourselves what *we* want to focus on, to determine what role our vocation – which I see as somewhat different to a career, though a career can be a vocation – plays in our life.

The 2 of Swords speaks to looking within for our own personal truth. This isn’t always easy, as our head and heart often pull us in opposite directions. It can be an indication to either go within and listen to what we want, or to remove our blinders and ask for – and accept – the help that we need. Justice is about the balancing of the scales. About weighing our decisions and the pros and cons of our actions, while ensuring that we are fair in our dealings. It also indicates the need for us to think over the things we have said and done, and to account for our words and actions.
This, then, points to the need to find that seemingly elusive balance between the calling of our heart and the practicality of living in the world. The word on the street is that when we leap, the net appears. Maybe it does – for some of us. Maybe it does – eventually. And maybe, for some of us, it just never appears.
The problem with platitudes like these is that they erase the lived reality of people who leap and fall into the abyss; and of people who don’t even have the option to leap. There’s a certain privilege inherent in this belief. And there are often situations where, much as we want to, we cannot just leap.
What if, instead of taking reckless action and leaping, or being paralyzed by fear at the edge of the cliff, we looked at this in a slightly different way. What if, instead of taking a leap of faith, we take a walk of faith?
As Lao Tzu said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
While a leap suggests an all-or-nothing approach to risk taking, a walk suggests a slower, more considered pace. There are still risks to be taken – but they’re more calculated. There’s still all of the work to be done, but there’s time to rest. There are difficulties to face, stretches of a walk that seem difficult, like maybe you won’t reach the summit. But there’s space to sit, to catch your breath, to look up at the mountain top and gather your strength and start walking again.
You won’t find too many people talking about their walk of faith – there’s no drama there, no awe-inspiring story. It’s a slow and steady march towards a vision, and no one really wants to hear that, you know? What we hear more often are stories of people who packed their bags and moved cross-country because they felt called to make that move. Often, what we don’t hear are the stresses and setbacks, or the cushions and support structures that made those leaps possible.
We also don’t really hear about the people who made that move, and failed, and came back to where they started from. We prefer to sweep those stories under the carpet because the shiny vision of leaping and being caught in a net is so much more alluring and “inspiring”.
But then, maybe, that’s just what these 2 cards are telling us – the Two of Swords and Justice – be true to yourself, be fair in your dealings, remain balanced.
There’s a lot of hard work that comes before taking a leap of faith. And there’s a lot to be said for taking a walk of faith. These are the themes and the ideas that this Libra full moon is illuminating at this time.

This symbol speaks to me of wisdom and culture, of time and timelessness, of history and evolution. As I imagine these old masters stepping out their frame and talking to one another after all the visitors have left, I wonder what they would have to say about the world today.
Watching the changes in society, in culture, in technology and how we interact with it, would they marvel at how far we have come, or lament the fact that we still seem to have learnt nothing from history?
