Tarot spread for the April 2021 full moon in Scorpio

The April 2021 full moon falls in the sign of Scorpio. The Scorpio archetype is known for its intense power and its ability to transform, much like the butterfly emerging from its cocoon, ready to fly. The Scorpio archetype isn’t afraid of the birth-death-rebirth cycle, for it is only when parts of us die and are reborn that we can fully transform.

So perhaps it’s not surprising that spiritually, the Scorpio archetype teaches us to surrender – to align our human will with divine will. It can teach us that sometimes our human trials can reveal a need for deep healing. This is not always easy to live with or to understand, especially when the need for healing arises from trauma, and yet on the other side of working with and healing trauma there can be deep and valuable transformation.

The April 2021 full moon also highlights our creativity and creative expression. It brings our personal pleasure and self-satisfaction to the forefront, highlighting all the little moments and things that bring us beauty and joy.

This is a wonderful time to focus in on creative pursuits and hobbies, as well as on the ways in which we can take better care of ourselves. This is ever more urgent given the times we are living in. Though vaccines have been rolled out across the world, we are not yet out of the woods. Here in India, we are battling with a second wave that is much worse than last year. In this scenario, remembering to take care of ourselves takes on an added sense of urgency.

Do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself – this includes your mental health. Doom scrolling is counterproductive. Keep an eye on the news and earmark specific times when you will amplify calls for help, but limit your social media intake. It may be more helpful to join small groups of volunteers working offline so that you’re not overwhelmed by the sheer volumes of requests for help on social networks like Twitter. Most importantly, if you’re not in essential services, please try to stay indoors. Make some time for creative play – doodling, stitching or knitting, baking – any activity that gets you to focus on physical sensations and ground in to your body for some time is a good way to try and keep the fear and anxiety at bay.

Astro-tarot influences for the April 2021 full moon

To throw some more light on the April full moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Scorpio full moon falls in decan 1, which is represented by the Five of Cups. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with Death, which is associated with Scorpio.

The five of cups speaks of sorrow and dejection over a loss. Of being so deeply focused on our grief that we are as yet unable to see that we still have a lot that is going for us. Once our grief has run its course and we become aware of the blessings around us, we will be able to pick up the pieces and move onto more stable footing. Death represents the cycle of change and transformation. Change, after all, is the only constant. It’s also the one thing most of us fear most. But Death isn’t concerned about our fears. It simply is. Change and the inevitable cycle of time – we can either embrace it and make these changes work for us, or resist and be dragged through the change, kicking and screaming. The choice is ours.

This, then, clearly speaks to a death-rebirth cycle. There is something in our lives that isn’t working anymore – it could be old patterns and/or stories that we tell ourselves that continue to hold us back from achieving our goals; or something that we thought we wanted but that is no longer in alignment with us.

Here’s the thing, though – our old patterns and stories may not always come from us. Often, they are familial or cultural. Writing them down, questioning them, and then reframing them can help us to start to change those stories.

But the work doesn’t stop there. A pattern that has formed in our minds over years and decades will not change simply because we re-wrote the story once. That old story may well continue to rear its head. It is up to us to constantly remind ourselves of our new story, until slowly, it becomes the default.

This Scorpio full moon may also bring to the forefront ideas or desires that have outlived their time. This is another death-rebirth cycle that can seem confronting, especially when you’ve spent a significant amount of time invested in working on said idea.

But it is better to change and adapt than to continue walking down a path that doesn’t feel resonant any more. Examining your feelings around the idea holds important clues – if choosing to let it go makes you feel free, honor that feeling, even though doubts may well creep in. And trust that there will be a new path on the horizon – even though you may not be able to see it clearly yet.

Focusing on all that you’ve lost could make this cycle of change more difficult to bear. Remembering that every situation teaches you something, even though it may not be immediately apparent or may feel like a heavy cross to bear, or that you have access to resources that you aren’t seeing clearly yet, can make it easier for you to navigate through this cycle of change.

Harnessing your creativity during these times, especially working with your hands, will also be very helpful. The act of making something with your own hands – be it art, poetry, a garden, a warm meal, a scarf or a dress you stitch – can help you to tap into an energy that is larger than yourself.

This symbol conjures up a feeling of stillness, tranquility, and deep peace. It’s a reminder that any state of tranquility requires an inner resonance and acceptance, which isn’t always easy to find. And yet, we all have access to that state, no matter how fleeting – we can come to it through meditation and breathwork, or through nature walks and creativity.

There’s also an element of reflecting and projecting at play here. Of being unable to distinguish what’s yours from someone else’s emotions or reality. There’s a reminder to examine if we are evaluating things on a superficial level, or if we are seeing things a little dispassionately – as they really are?

And finally, this symbol is a reminder that we can ask for and receive signs and omens all around us. It’s what I call everyday magic – a snippet of a song that speaks to us, seeing a bird or an animal that has some personal meaning to us, reading a message that feels like it was meant for us.

Be awake to the magic, and the stillness!
