July 2019: Tarot spread for the new moon in Leo

Tarot spread for the July/August 2019 new moon in Leo

The July/August 2019 new moon falls in the sign of Leo. The Leo archetype is bold and dynamic, with a passionate zest for living. This is a sign that is creative, fiery, and confident, but can quickly succumb to its shadow aspects of overbearing pride, drama and arrogance.

Spiritually, the Leo archetype teaches the principle of creative manifestation. Clarity of thought and focus direct energy, which points to the spiritual principle that it is your beliefs about life that will shape your life. You can see this spiritual principle in play with a regular gratitude practice. As you cultivate an attitude of gratitude, you experience a significant transformation in your life and circumstances. And while your life may not change dramatically, your outlook to life changes, which leads to a shift in how you shape your life.

Coming after a rather heavy eclipse season, the July/August 2019 new moon is one of the most playful and pleasurable new moons of the year. This Leo moon throws the spotlight on our friendships and extended social circles, making this a wonderful moon for kicking up our heels and having a spot of fun. This moon also highlights our hopes, wishes and dreams – the ones that fuel our life-long goals and desires. This makes the new moon in Leo an opportune time to infuse some fresh, vibrant energy into our long-term goals and find creative and dramatic pathways to working towards those goals.

Astro-Tarot influences for the July/August new moon

To throw some more light on the July/August new moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation.

The Leo new moon falls in decan 1, which is represented by the 5 of Wands. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with Strength, which is associated with Leo.

The 5 of Wands is a card of flux and change. The old structures have been uprooted, there is a whole lot of energy in action,  but it’s chaotic and there’s no telling where the chips will fall. This is also a card that hints at collaboration – done right, collaboration can bring new opportunities and amplify ideas. But without proper planning, collaborations can also fall flat. The Strength card speaks to our ability to tame the ego – the wild impulses and irrational fears that can so easily throw us off course. By allowing us to gain control over our irrational impulses, the Strength card gives us the gift of clarity and enables us to act in accordance with our will.

This, then, speaks to the need to temper the fire of our enthusiasm. This is not to be confused with dampening it. Look at this from the analogy of a campfire – when we feed the fire effectively, we can build ourselves a merrily blazing campfire where we can spend hours laughing, exchanging ideas, and having fun. But if we are not careful with how we feed the campfire, it can either become a blazing inferno that becomes difficult to contain, or a feeble fire that is easily extinguished. Just as it takes skill to build a campfire, it requires a good blend of clarity and enthusiasm to lift your projects off the ground. Find that sweet spot, and the new moon in Leo will help you to shine.

Working with the moon

The new moon is when we set intentions for the moon cycle. It’s a way to focus on a particular goal or desire from one new moon to the next. I have found this to be a very effective way to get things done and to achieve my desires. Of course, there have been cycles when I have slacked, but working with cyclical time gives me a gentler perspective when it comes to achieving my desires.

This blog post details my new moon ritual and how I work with the new moon cycle:
