On this episode of the Art with Soul podcast, I talk about social media, especially as it pertains to artists, and hustle culture. There’s no denying that social media can take up a lot of our time — both as consumers and creators of content. But when does content creation become something we do just to feed the algorithm, and how can we take back control of our time?

As artists, almost all of us use at least one if not more social media platforms, be it to share our art, find artist communities, or to build our own communities and sell our art and create a business. No matter which spectrum you fall on, social media takes time. But how important is social media for artists?
Tune in as I talk about:
- The true time + cost of social media for artists
- Playing to ever changing social media algorithms
- Rethinking the idea of consistency
- Getting clear on your why as it relates to your art and social media presence
- Performative productivity and how we can begin to rethink our relationship with what it means to be productive
and more!
“If you’re an artist who wants to sell her art, even as a small side gig, it takes a lot of work. It’s beautiful work. It’s necessary work. But playing to the algorithm, to feed ever hungry social media companies, isn’t really part of it…How much of your time and energy you devote to it, is definitely something that you can — to an extent — control.”

As you know, this resonates with me. You’re so right about understanding our intention to spend time on a platform.
Yes, I guess it is all about understanding why we do what we do, especially on social media.
Very interesting topic, I must say. I am definitely looking forward to listening to your podcast this evening, Shinjini! :))
I hope you had a chance to listen, Esha, and that you enjoyed this episode 🙂
I did, Shinjini and I loved it. Very thought-provoking piece and made me reflect on a few things myself. Thank you for sharing it, Shinjini.

This REALLY resonates with me. Your labeling of “hustle culture” is so incredibly TRUE. This is very, insightful of you, thank you for sharing. I think I am going to make a conscious shift toward my email list. My soul is fed by making my pottery, and I am joyful when they sell, but I am really stressed by the whole needing to stay on top with how the social media algorithms and how they constantly shift. Thank you for this podcast, I am going to take what you have shared and focus on what I am using my energy on and where I WANT to be productive :).
I’m so happy to hear that! I think focusing on your email list will be a much better use of your time and energy, rather than worrying about social media algorithms! And being able to do more of what feeds your soul – I don’t think there’s anything better than that!
