Tarot spread for the September 2021 full moon in Pisces

The September 2021 full moon falls in the sign of Pisces. The Pisces archetype is highly intuitive and very open to the flow of creative imagination. This is the sign of creative dreamers and mystics and visionaries, which makes this new moon an excellent time to flex your intuitive and creative muscles.

Spiritually, the Pisces archetype teaches the principle of unity, of recognizing the divinity within you. One way to understand this principle is by looking at creation – the creator {God, Universe, Source, however you wish to name it} created this earth, the rivers and seas, the trees, birds, insects, animals, man. Similarly, man has the ability to create – and to create consciously. It is this ability that points to the spiritual truth of Pisces, that we are spiritual beings having a human experience {with the emphasis on our humanness in all its frailty and beauty}. It is by accepting responsibility for consciously creating – which isn’t always easy – that you connect most deeply with the creator. Needless to say, empathy and compassion are the cornerstones of the Pisces archetype.

This is a beautifully dreamy and gentle full moon, and also a potentially emotional one. Instead of being completely rational, this full moon asks us to lead with our emotions — to wear our hearts on our sleeve, as the saying goes. It’s the perfect time for divination, some gentle self-care rituals, and some sweet healing.

Astro-tarot influences for the September 2021 full moon

To throw some more light on the September full moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Pisces new moon falls in decan 3, which is represented by the Ten of Cups. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Moon, which is associated with Pisces.

The 10 of Cups represents a time of peace and prosperity; of things humming along beautifully; of gratitude and abundance; balance and inner happiness. The 10s also represent completion, which contain within them the seeds of new beginnings. The Moon rules our imagination, which can be both a wonderful and a terrible thing. The imagination is where we weave our beautiful dreams; the imagination is also fertile ground for our festering fears. The Moon is also mystery and magic; it’s the cycle of birth and death and re-birth; and a visual reminder of cyclical time.

Looking at these cards makes me think of contentment. Of being at peace with and satisfied with our lives as they are right now, in this moment, with what we have and with who we are. Being content doesn’t really mean that we no longer want anything, but rather that we are not constantly running after the next shiny thing.

The 10 of Cups illustrates this beautifully, I think, especially when you look at the cards from the Before Tarot and After Tarot decks as well.

We can allow an unexpected thunderstorm to ruin our mood completely, or we can run back home, change into dry clothes, and admire the rainbow, then gather together with family for a warm meal around the fire.

Contentment depends on how we react to the unexpected moments, to the storms that all of us inevitably face. If we get caught up in a negative thought spiral, its easy to miss out on the joy of catching a rainbow!

Part of the difficulty with experiencing contentment on a more regular basis is that we typically find it when we are present in the moment, not living in the past or projecting ourselves into the future. Staying with the thunderstorm analogy, if we come back home soaking wet and are berating ourselves for not grabbing the umbrella on the way out, or are already thinking about all the clothes that will now need to be washed and the floor that will need another scrubbing, we can miss the simple contentment of changing into dry clothes, putting on some music and squaring up the house, and then enjoying a cup of tea.

Very often, though, we are all caught up in our heads. It’s not the most natural thing for us to be here now — I think that’s an achievement only Zen masters (and cats!) can unlock! The rest of us mere mortals need to constantly remind ourselves to root down into the present moment, and even then, it isn’t always easy to do.

This full moon gives us that opportunity to slow down. To savor our lives. To give thanks for what we have. To focus on what is in front of us. It asks us to be fully embodied — hands on heart, breath even and slow, and to really notice whatever we are feeling and experiencing right now.

When pleasant feelings arise, we can be fully open to them. When not-so-pleasant feelings arise, we can acknowledge them, and then consider what we may want to explore next. Sometimes, just acknowledging the feeling and giving it our attention is all that is needed for it to flow away. In that moment of acknowledging, an insight may arise, or something may click into place. All that was needed to unlock it was a moment of embodied stillness.

And that moment of insight is one of the gifts that this Pisces full moon offers us.

Sabian Symbol for the September 2021 full moon

The Sabian Symbol for Pisces 28 degrees is Light Breaking Into Many Colors As It Passes Through A Prism.

Imagine being able to create rainbows on call. With prisms, you can! All you need is a glass of water, two sheets of white paper, and a flashlight. It’s like a reminder that you have access to magic — you just need to remember to call it up!

Creating this prismatic light does involves a bit of trial and error until you get the angles just right. But once you know the angle, you can create a rainbow every single time. There’s no hit-and-miss, no ambiguity to the process. In much the similar way, the world is essentially stable — the sun will rise in the morning and set in the evening, and spring will come after winter. It is on this foundational aspect of nature that much of our common sense is also built, and much of our understanding of how to navigate through the stormy waters of our lives.
