Tarot spread for the October 2021 full moon in Aries

The October 2021 full moon falls in the sign of Aries. The Aries archetype is known for its bold – often rash – action, for going where angels fear to tread. As the first sign of the zodiac, it represents the active core of our spiritual journey on earth, and teaches us to act in accordance with our ideals. The Aries archetype teaches us to be unafraid to march to our own drumbeat, to assert our willpower towards the attainment of our desires, and to embrace beginner’s mind and the innate trust and explosive power {conviction + action} that is needed to start something new.

Spiritually, the Aries archetype teaches us about action. And as most of us know, it’s easier to talk about the things we want to do than to put in the work and actually do the thing! Aries teaches us that courage is the key to unlocking the full potential of this spiritual principle. And that comes from connecting your head to your heart, focusing your will, and taking consistent action towards your dreams.

There’s an assertive quality to the energy of this full moon, which can encourage you to take bold, affirmative action. It can illuminate the areas of your life where you have been leading with fear, and help you to confront + transmute it. You could have some sudden insights and a-ha moments in the run-up to and around this full moon.

If you’ve been particularly busy, this lunation also offers you a chance to sink into some much needed rest. But there is a bit of a push-pull energy to this moon, with the desire for rest in direct opposition to the desire to keep pushing on. Carving out some time for soul work — meditation, art, or any activity that brings you to a flow state — can help you more easily navigate through these energies.

Astro-tarot influences for the Aries full moon

To throw some more light on the October full moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Aries full moon falls in decan 3, which is represented by the Four of Wands. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Emperor, which is associated with Aries.

The Daily Pause Oracle Deck

I designed this beautiful, 40-card oracle deck to bring in some stillness, to give us a word or an idea to reflect on as we go about our day.

Supported by the four elements – earth, air, fire, water – and a carefully thought-out structure that connects the cards, The Daily Pause oracle will help you to listen to and trust your own inner knowing.

There’s no learning curve involved with using this deck. Just get quiet, shuffle the cards, pull one out, and reflect on the word you’re presented with.

The 4 of Wands is one of those cards that feels especially delightful when it makes an appearance during — or soon after — a particularly difficult period. We started this moon cycle with the 3 of Swords and its focus on heartbreak and healing. The 4 of Wands reminds us that acknowledging the progress we’ve made — no matter how small — is key to the healing and recovery process.

We may not be out of the woods yet, we may still feel a little wobbly and shaky, but we are offered a sense of tentative stability, a semblance of order, little indications that we are getting closer to the light at the end of a long, dark tunnel.

This is also the point when we can begin to be a bit more objective with regards to our situation. With objectivity comes the power of our will — not necessarily willpower, rather our ability to decide and choose and act in ways that are in closer accordance with how we wish to show up in our lives. (The Emperor)

In most situations, we get to decide how we want to live, who we want to be, and what we want to focus our energy on. With this full moon, we are offered the opportunity to start envisioning the bigger vision that guides our days and ultimately our lives.

I came across a quote from the theologian Richard Bulzachelli in Jessica Dore’s recent newsletter. Though the context in which she shared it was very different, a portion of it seems appropriate for this lunation. “…choosing to put the past behind us and [living] toward a new future in which the mistakes and losses of the past could be replaced by better choices and new opportunities.”

Remembering that the past doesn’t need to define us…that we get to make better choices and choose new opportunities…that we get to choose. May this prove to be just the medicine that you need at this time.

This symbol brings to mind the meltdown that we often witness from sports fans when their home team loses a match. Though the disappointment is acute, all is forgotten in a day or two, and everything is forgiven when the team wins the next match.

This is a useful analogy to keep in mind for the next time you feel paralyzed or caught up in the perfection trap. Every new “performance” is a chance to redeem yourself anew. Its a powerful realization to counter a particularly loud inner critic, too. Even if this one thing that you’re working on bombs, no one is going to remember it for too long. You always have the opportunity to try again. To fail again. To change your mind. To go off on a different tangent.

The inner critic tends to magnify our failures, forcing us to view things through the imagined response of an unseen audience. Yet the reality rarely matches its catastrophizing. Instead of allowing your critic’s negative projections to hold you back, how can you adopt a more realistic outlook?

Journal prompts for the Aries full moon

Not a cardslinger? No problem. Here are some journaling questions for you instead.

Make a fears list. Start with I fear…or I’m afraid…List all your fears on the page

Look over your list. Do any surprise you? Make you think, “really, I’m afraid of that!”? Make a note of where they hold you back so you can decide to be braver. Sometimes, it’s as easy — and as difficult — as that.

Are any of these long-standing fears that you thought you should have gotten over by now? Circle them. Write them on a separate piece of paper and burn them.

Ritualize this:

Light a candle. Take a few deep breaths. Read over your list.

Say aloud: I’m willing to release all of these fears. To allow the fire to burn them to ash so that they don’t hold me back and hamper my growth any more. I know that I have the strength to walk forward without these thoughts pulling me back. I release them now.”

Burn the paper to ash. Blow the ash in the wind or flush it down the toilet.
