The January 2022 new moon falls in the sign of Capricorn. Symbolized by the mountain goat, which maintains perfect balance while it climbs over precarious rock ledges, the Capricorn archetype is one of disciplined and dogged determination towards the attainment of our worldly desires.
Spiritually, the Capricorn archetype teaches us about integrity and helps us to harness the ability to plan our work, and stick to it, no matter what. In these times of 24×7 consumption culture, it’s easy to be addicted with shiny object syndrome and forget about our goals and plans. Capricorn teaches us about the meaning of integrity: to align ourselves with our highest ideals and actualize our potential.
This new moon also highlights the home and hearth — both physical and psychic. Coming right on the heels of the turn of the calendar, this new moon is a good time to set some practices that will support and nurture you through the year. Given the rough few years we have had, practices that bring you tranquility, that help you feel grounded, and that give you a sense of connection with God/the universe/source will be particularly helpful.
Also look at how you can fluff up your spaces to make them feel more nurturing and calming. Family ties, and relationships with friends and loved ones also get a sweet boost with this new moon.

The Daily Pause Oracle Deck
I designed this beautiful, 40-card oracle deck to bring in some stillness, to give us a word or an idea to reflect on as we go about our day.
Supported by the four elements – earth, air, fire, water – and a carefully thought-out structure that connects the cards, The Daily Pause oracle will help you to listen to and trust your own inner knowing.
There’s no learning curve involved with using this deck. Just get quiet, shuffle the cards, pull one out, and reflect on the word you’re presented with.
Our society is built on individualism — each man on his own, as the saying goes, out fighting for a bigger piece of the pie, intent on grabbing as much as he can without a second thought for anyone else. Individualism leads to toxic capitalism, and also to isolation, a lack of depth and meaning, and eventual burnout.
In this culture, we are chained to materialism and hedonism, and everyone else is our competition. But there is a different way, a better way. One that centers communities of care, equal opportunities, diversity, and collaboration. A way that is slowly starting to come into focus.
One of the things we’ve learnt over the last couple of years is that we cannot survive alone. Initially dubbed the great leveler, the economic disparities between us soon became very clear. Locked away in isolation, the importance of family units, of friends and of community soon became apparent.
We’ve spent the last almost two years in a slow dismantling of structures and systems that were no longer working. That is probably one of the reasons for The Great Resignation, as people re-assessed their relationship with work and strove for better work-life balance.
This refocusing on the things that truly matter; on valuing time over money {not time as money, but having the time for leisure}; on giving back and sharing our resources; on taking seemingly small steps towards sustainability all go a very long way towards reimagining toxic capitalism and individualism.
And this Capricorn new moon is the perfect time to sow some seeds of care — for the planet, for the people we live with and the places we live in, and for ourselves.
Sabian Symbol for the January 2022 new moon in Capricorn
The Sabian Symbol for Capricorn 12 degrees is A Fire Worshipper Meditates On The Ultimate Realities Of Existence.
Some of my earliest childhood memories of fire worship are from havans ({a Hindu fire ritual that involves mantras, prayers, and offerings made to a fire} and the agiyari {the Parsi Fire Temple}. Though I found havans immensely boring as a child and never did visit an agiyari {non-Parsis are not allowed to enter the temple}, they are both, at their core, a way for us mere mortals to connect to something larger and wiser and more powerful than ourselves.
This symbol, then, makes me think of the ability to be focused, to block out distractions and to turn inwards, alert for any messages or synchronicities that may come my way. In 360 Degrees of Wisdom: The Sabian Oracle, Lynda Hill writes, “This Symbol is often about creating magic. Look through appearances to get to the heart of things. Alternatively, it can picture someone who goes to fanatical lengths to understand or promote something. This Symbol often calls into question the true meaning of the material things of life; do they get too much or too little attention?”
Now that’s an interesting question.
