The June 2023 new moon falls in the sign of Gemini. The Gemini archetype is very curious, an excellent communicator, and a disseminator of knowledge. It is the sign of the writer, of those who tend to think deeply, are highly perceptive, and prefer to learn from experience.

Spiritually, the Gemini archetype is about courageous conversation, be it with another person or with the Universe. Gemini adds its vibration to the advancement of culture and civilization through dialogue, be that via books or blogs or letters.

This new moon is a good time to focus on our personal power and the ways in which we contribute to the world. Some of us contribute in big and beautiful ways – through social activism, teaching, sharing of wisdom and knowledge – others in gentle, smaller ways – among our families and communities. Both ways of being in the world are valid.

This Gemini new moon also asks us to take a closer look at our vocation, and to see if we are in right relationship with it. To ask ourselves what we want to focus on, to determine what role our vocation – which I see as somewhat different to a career, though a career can be a vocation – plays in our life.

To throw some more light on the June new moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Gemini new moon falls in decan 3, which is represented by the Ten of Swords. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Lovers, which is associated with Gemini.

When I was learning how to read the tarot, one of my teachers referred to the 10 of Swords as the “drama queen” card. That description has stuck with me through the years. It doesn’t take 10 swords to defeat an opponent, after all — one well-placed sword is often enough. That makes me think of the phrase ‘death by a thousand cuts’ and how often we inflict those thousand metaphorical cuts on ourselves. That makes me think of the phrase ‘death by a thousand cuts’ and all the ways that social media makes us question our enoughness. With everyone sharing their highlight reels and hot takes; with the editing out of the hot mess and the confusion; and the always put-together picture that we are fed in a constant, scrolling, never-ending loop, it’s easy to feel like we are the only ones flailing around in the dark, unable to make sense of our lives.

It’s enough to make us feel paralyzed, small, questioning our every decision. It’s easy to feel like we need to constantly re-invent ourselves, re-make our story, be in some way different, more together, more focused, more ambitious, more, more, more.

This constantly on stream of scrolling can make it easy to feel divorced from ourselves. Ungrounded. Unmoored. And I wonder, are the 10 Swords driven into our back an indication that we need to mute the constant noise in our heads, the loop of not enoughness that we recite to ourselves? Are they perhaps a dramatic invitation, asking us to become more grounded into our own lives, to tune out the external noise and focus on what matters to us?

What if we spent some time during this new moon cycle unplugged? Using our phone just for the essentials — making calls, staying connected with family and loved ones, but off social media? Maybe even off newsletters and articles, and most definitely off the news?

What if we spent this time focused on the minutiae of our lives? On doing what brings us joy? Reading (books, not blogs and newsletters), creating, crafting, cooking, baking, gardening, catching up with friends, going for walks, dancing in the living room, working on the courses we’ve already purchased, journaling? Just making the space for the external noise to fade away. To sink into our own thoughts, our own ideas, remembering what matters to us?

This doesn’t have to be a deep excavation. It can be playful. Simple. Quiet. Just getting reacquainted with our own thoughts, our own loves, our own lives, our own sources of delight.

Sabian Symbol for the June 2023 new moon
