September 2024: Tarot spread for the lunar eclipse in Pisces

Plus an astro-tarot forecast, journaling questions, and an exploration of the Sabian symbol for the full moon and lunar eclipse in Pisces.

The September 2024 full moon falls in the sign of Pisces. The Pisces archetype is highly intuitive and very open to the flow of creative imagination. This is the sign of creative dreamers and mystics and visionaries, which makes this full moon an excellent time to flex your intuitive and creative muscles.

Spiritually, the Pisces archetype teaches the principle of unity, of recognizing the divinity within you. One way to understand this principle is by looking at creation – the creator {God, Universe, Source, however you wish to name it} created this earth, the rivers and seas, the trees, birds, insects, animals, man. Similarly, man has the ability to create – and to create consciously. It is this ability that points to the spiritual truth of Pisces, that we are spiritual beings having a human experience {with the emphasis on our humanness in all its frailty and beauty}. It is by accepting responsibility for consciously creating – which isn’t always easy – that you connect most deeply with the creator. Needless to say, empathy and compassion are the cornerstones of the Pisces archetype.

This Pisces full moon also kicks off eclipse season, with a partial lunar eclipse that will be visible in Europe, much of Asia, Africa, North and South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Arctic, and Antarctica.

Lunar eclipses typically bring endings and closure, helping us to release things that no longer serve us. Expect sudden changes in consciousness, intuitive insights, and pattern-breaking a-has around this time. The seeds that you planted during the last solar eclipse will also start to blossom around this time.

This Pisces full moon also highlights our fears and the ways in which they hold us back from achieving our bold and beautiful goals. Once we understand the ways in which we allow fear to control us, we can take more strategic action to move towards our goals. It would be helpful to carve out some time for stillness and reflection, to see how you can improve your inner world — your mental chatter, any old beliefs or patterns that are holding you back or preventing you from seeing what is working.

Astro-tarot influences for the September 2024 full moon and lunar eclipse

To throw some more light on the September full moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Pisces lunar eclipse falls in decan 3, which is represented by the Ten of Cups. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Moon, which is associated with Pisces.

The Daily Pause oracle deck

The Daily Pause Oracle

A beautifully designed 40-card oracle deck to bring in some stillness, give you a word or an idea to reflect on as you go about your day. Supported by the four elements – earth, air, fire, water – and a carefully thought-out structure that connects the cards, The Daily Pause oracle will help you to listen to and trust your own inner knowing. There’s no learning curve involved with using this deck. Just get quiet, shuffle the cards, pull one out, and reflect on the word you’re presented with.

The 10 of Cups speaks to me of contentment. Of being at peace with and satisfied with our lives as they are right now, in this moment, with what we have and with who we are. Being content doesn’t mean that we no longer have any desires, but rather that we are not constantly running after the next shiny thing, or basing our happiness on an imagined future outcome. That is the domain of The Moon, with its illusions and fantasies; its worries and anxieties.

I believe that contentment depends, on a large part, on how we react to the unexpected moments, to the storms that all of us inevitably face. If we get caught up in a negative thought spiral, its easy to miss out on the little joys that surround us each day.

Part of the difficulty with experiencing contentment on a more regular basis is that we typically find it when we are present in the moment, not living in the past or projecting ourselves into the future. Very often, though, we are caught up in our heads. It’s not the most natural thing for us to be here now — I think that’s an achievement only Zen masters (and cats!) can unlock. The rest of us mere mortals need to constantly remind ourselves to root down into the present moment, and even then, it isn’t always easy to do.

This full moon can give us that opportunity to slow down and savor our lives. To give thanks for what we have. To focus on what is in front of us. It asks us to be fully embodied — hands on heart, breath even and slow, and to really notice whatever we are feeling and experiencing right now.

This is especially important because there’s a lot happening cosmically. The Moon squares Jupiter and opposes Neptune, which can lead to overwhelm, a lack of imagination, stalled plans, and overindulgence. This, while Saturn, Pluto, and Uranus are in stronger positions, creating an opposition or tension between the things we long to change and transform; the path we wish to traverse; and the vision and optimism we need to bring it to fruition.

This can be somewhat of an emotionally challenging or trying time. Our fears may be highlighted. Things may seem unclear or come to a crashing end. But if we root in to mama earth, put our hands on our heart, and focus on our breath, we can find the resilience to get through most things. And as with all cycles, this too shall pass.

When pleasant feelings arise, be fully open to them. When not-so-pleasant feelings arise, acknowledge them, and then consider what you may want to explore next. Sometimes, just acknowledging the feeling and giving it our attention is all that is needed for it to flow away. In that moment of acknowledgement, an insight may arise, or something may click into place. All that was needed to unlock it was a moment of embodied stillness.

And that moment of insight is one of the gifts that this Pisces full moon offers us.

It’s interesting that the symbol for this full moon is a new moon! I think it indicates a new beginning of sorts. Though we don’t typically set intentions on full moons, I think this symbol indicates the possibility of a new beginning — something supported by the lunar eclipse as well, which is, after all, a portent of endings, and those eventually lead to new beginnings.

According to Linda Hill, who writes in 360 Degrees of Wisdom: The Sabian Oracle, “Periodically, there is a need to let things go from the past. Relationships, jobs, friendships; in fact any situation at all might be coming to completion, or needing a break for a while…However, if people are given their own measure of freedom, they may come back together when the time and the energy is right.”

It may also be a good time to reflect on and set some initial groundwork for the projects that you want to focus on over the remainder of the year, so that you can direct your energy towards them at the new moon.
