Tarot spread and astrology and tarot forecast for the January 2026 full moon in Cancer

The January 2026 full moon falls in the sign of Cancer. The Cancer archetype is emotional, intuitive, nurturing and healing. It also symbolizes “home” and all the things that home represents – not just our physical home, but also our emotions, energy, body, and the spiritual hearth of our souls.

Spiritually, the Cancer archetype is one of compassion, of recognizing that people, in general, act to the best of their abilities, limited by their education, upbringing and current awareness. The Cancer archetype knows that love and forgiveness, where possible, are the best way to respond to destructive behavior – along with firm boundaries, of course.

This full moon also highlights our sense of self-worth and self-esteem, which are intrinsically tied to our finances, our emotions, and the things we value. This Cancer moon encourages us to reflect on our tangible and intangible possessions (our feelings and emotions, as well as our inner selves, needs and wants) and our values — specifically on the ways in which our material possessions are either harming or supporting us.

Ideally, our possessions should bring us a sense of well-being rather than a feeling of being surrounded by things that just don’t really feel like us. This leads us to question what we value (both tangibly and intangibly) and why, and to examine what we own, what we want to own, and why. Being mindful around purchase decisions around this lunation would also be wise.

Astrology and Tarot influences for the January 2026 full moon in Cancer

To throw some more light on the January full moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astrological and tarot influences of this lunation. The Cancer full moon falls in decan 2, which is represented by the 3 of Cups. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Chariot, which is associated with Cancer.

The Daily Pause Oracle Deck

I designed this beautiful, 40-card oracle deck to bring in some stillness, to give us a word or an idea to reflect on as we go about our day.

Supported by the four elements – earth, air, fire, water – and a carefully thought-out structure that connects the cards, The Daily Pause oracle will help you to listen to and trust your own inner knowing.

There’s no learning curve involved with using this deck. Just get quiet, shuffle the cards, pull one out, and reflect on the word you’re presented with.

The first full moon of the year has long been associated with renewal and hope…a time to reflect on the past and embrace new beginnings. It’s a time to release old energies to make way for new beginnings, new ways of being and doing. And coming as it does right at the start of a new year, there is some potent magic brewing here.

I don’t know about you, but it takes me a while to settle into a new year. It sounds silly, it’s just a date after all, a turn of the calendar year. But there’s an undeniable energy to this time…the fresh start effect…the possibility of change and potential.

There were years when I would wait eagerly for 1 January, like a race horse ready to bolt out of its stall, chomping at the bit to get cracking on my goals. Recently, though, the crossing over into a new year feels a bit gentler, a bit more spacious. I like to take some time to really think things over before committing to resolutions or goals or even intentions.

And this is the magic that this full moon brings. The time to pause, to notice, to reflect. To go over your goals/resolutions/intentions one more time. To notice if there’s a rigidity to your planning, if you’ve pushed joy to the margins.

From the vantage point of the start of the year, 12 months seems like a long time. We think we can cram in a lot more into a year than is realistically possible. We make no space for life, for ease, for joy — or at least that’s something I’ve noticed in previous years. We can try and stuff so much into a year that it’s impossible to do it all unless we live like hermits chained to our metaphorical desks.

This Cancer full moon asks you to invite in spaciousness. To ensure you haven’t pushed your joy to the margins. To gently recalibrate and harmonize your will and your heart. Balance discipline with joy, let your purpose be driven by pleasure, follow what feels alive and exciting, make curiosity your compass and your map. Even the toughest of challenges — most of them, at least — can be met with curiosity, by asking What If?

There’s an expansiveness to this full moon, supported by Jupiter, the planet of abundance, which forms a conjunction with the Moon. Jupiter encourages us to think bigger, to open up our imagination to what’s possible, to seek out different viewpoints and opinions, to engage in abundant optimism.

With Uranus, the planet of change, forming a semi-square with the Moon, you may notice some push-and-pull, some discordant energy, perhaps even a recalibration or reconciliation of different ways of being and doing. This may feel a bit chaotic in the short term, but it should lead to a transformative shift in the ways in which you show up to your work, to your craft, to your life.

Ultimately, this Cancer full moon invites you to step into the new year aligned, open, and attuned; willing to trust that what feels good, true, and alive will carry you forward.

Womanrunes for the January 2026 full moon in Cancer

Every full moon, I will draw a Womanrune for us, as a theme, a learning, a focus point for the days until the next full moon rolls around. This month, I drew Rune 21: The Egg. Rune of Naming.

Sign up for the Numinous Stardust!

Step into the rhythm of the moon with original tarot spreads, astro-tarot forecasts, rituals and journaling prompts delivered to your inbox each Full Moon and New Moon.

This is such a beautiful rune to start the year with. The Egg is the rune of identification…of owning who you are, what you know, and what you have to offer. It’s also a rune of new beginnings, of change and growth, emergence and renewal.

As we stand at the threshold of a new year, get some clarity on what you want to focus on this year. Name it. Claim it. Own it. Dream a few dreams. Make a few plans. Really think about how you can implement or work towards some of your deepest, most tender goals, especially the ones that scare you a bit, because they are so very important to you.

And then do the work. Because just dreaming isn’t ever enough.

The Womanrunes were created by Shekhinah Mountainwater in 1987. There were originally no written interpretations available for these runes, other than the name and one word meanings, which offer tremendous scope for personal interpretation. The remastered original hand drawn Womanrunes can be purchased here. Molly Remer subsequently wrote Womanrunes: A Guide to Their Use and Interpretation, based on her own meditations and interpretations of the runes. Her book is available on Amazon and Etsy.

What qualities do I want to embody in the new year?

How can I stay open to curiosity even while pursuing seemingly difficult goals?

When I look over my goals/resolutions/intentions for this year, do any of them create a sense of tightness or discomfort? If so, does that goal really need to be on your list? If it does, how can I invite some spaciousness, joy, or curiosity in the way I approach it?

What would “success” look like for me this year? What would it feel like in my body, my daily life, my creative energy? How can I define success in a way that nourishes rather than pressures me?

  1. I agree about the gentle transformation of the shift into a new year. The last few years, I’ve felt it begin to change around Summer Solstice (I’m in Australia) and feel it sometimes continues to February, generally Chinese New Year (that could be some DNA resonance from Ancestors). Or even until Eclipse Season starts. It certainly is not a “one and done” kind of transition, firstly thanking the ending year, then floating in possibility, before the intentions come and energy settles in a new or different way. I love your work, thank you for sharing You 💖

    • Yes! I’ve noticed a subtle shift too in recent years. It takes me until the first few weeks of January to feel the precious year end, and until around Feb/Imbolc before I feel ready to welcome new year energy. Thank you for being here, and for sharing your thoughts with me! xx
