October 2020: Tarot spread for the full blue moon in Taurus

Tarot spread for the October 2020 full blue moon in Taurus

The second full moon in October 2020 falls in the sign of Taurus. The Taurus archetype is grounded and steadfast, calm and composed, firm and also somewhat stubborn. This is a sign that is practical and earthy, and is associated with material pleasures, desires, luxuriousness, and abundance.

Spiritually, the Taurus archetype teaches the principle of belonging through presence…our presence as sacred human beings…honouring the body temple…honouring the flow of life. This can be difficult given the society we live in, which praises the hustle over reverence and treats time as money rather than a finite resource that should be used wisely in the pursuit of the things that give us meaning.

This full moon is a little extra magical, given that it’s a Blue Moon and that it falls on Samhain. A Blue Moon is the second full moon in a calendar month, and happens every two and a half years, on average.

The October blue moon also highlights our desires and aspirations, which is in perfect tandem with the Blue Moon – often called the Wishing Moon. I don’t know about you, but my plans for 2020 got derailed, although new and unexpected and exciting things did happen too. And though we are not yet out of the woods, I think most of us have come to terms with the “new normal”. Use this full blue moon to release any old patterns or any stuckness that came to light this year, take a few moments to reflect on your blessings, and make some space to dream some beautiful dreams.

Astro-tarot influences for the October 2020 full blue moon

To throw some more light on the astrology of the second full moon this October, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Taurus full moon falls in decan 1, which is represented by the 5 of Pentacles. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Hierophant, which is associated with Taurus.

The 5 of Pentacles often points to difficult times and a feeling of insecurity – this could be financial, as well as psychological or physical discomfort and difficulty. The Hierophant is traditionally associated with religious order and social and hierarchical structures. It is also associated with teachers, healers and gurus, and with conforming to societal norms and expectations.

This, then, points to scarcity mindset and the fallacy of blindly following traditional markers of success, which is all the more pertinent as this blue moon in Taurus is highlighting our desires and aspirations.

When we think of desires, we often think too about manifestation, which can be a pretty hot button subject, with some people completely opposed to the very idea and others fervent advocates.

The Daily Pause Oracle Deck

I designed this beautiful, 40-card oracle deck to bring in some stillness, to give us a word or an idea to reflect on as we go about our day.

Supported by the four elements – earth, air, fire, water – and a carefully thought-out structure that connects the cards, The Daily Pause oracle will help you to listen to and trust your own inner knowing.

There’s no learning curve involved with using this deck. Just get quiet, shuffle the cards, pull one out, and reflect on the word you’re presented with.

The waters of manifestation have been muddied by a very simplistic, transactional understanding of the law of attraction. The verbiage may not work for all of us, but strip out the law of attraction, and manifestation is simply making things manifest – bringing them to form.

And that’s what we want with our desires – to bring them to form. What often stops us, is our mindset. And these cards are pointing to two key areas: scarcity mindset {like when we think we’re not good enough or deserving enough} and rigid thinking {for example, when we simply follow the Joneses without stopping to consider what we really want}.

When you sit down and list out your desires, there are some that feel exciting, and some that feel challenging, and immediately, certain stories and thoughts can start to play out in your mind.

When you pay attention to those, you’ll be able to discern the negative voices and the skeptical voices, the ones that think you’re being too big for your boots. You’ll also hear all the fears, and all the “conventional wisdom” around certain things.

We are being asked, at this time especially, to work with this material. You can try and rewrite that story, or do a little ritual and release it and ask for some gentle healing and clarity around those areas.

The other aspect to this is to become very clear about your success markers. We can often desire something, and want it to manifest in a particular way. But it doesn’t always work like that. Our desires can sometimes manifest in weird and wonderful ways that we may never have expected.

Which is one of the reasons why we need to be open in our thinking and less rigid about what success will look like to us. So, for example, instead of focusing on losing 10 kgs, think about why you want to lose that weight. How will it make you feel? What will be different for you? When those feelings and differences become apparent, you’ve been successful. This helps you break that constant cycle of feeling like you cannot achieve what you want to. More often than not, we do achieve what we want to, we just haven’t thought it out carefully enough.

What happens when you don’t know what success looks like to you, is that you may simply blow past it and not even realize it, or you may end up chasing a dream only to realize that it doesn’t make you happy.

Sticking with our weight loss example, there are numerous examples of people who lost an incredible amount of weight, but that did nothing for their self esteem or for how they viewed themselves or spoke to themselves.

This blue moon in Taurus is really asking us to understand our why and to not simply follow the herd, but to understand ourselves and what we want to achieve.
