Tarot spread for the May 2021 full moon in Sagittarius

The May 2021 full moon falls in the sign of Sagittarius. The freedom loving Sagittarius archetype is in a constant search for inspiration, new avenues of exploration, and adventure. This is a sign that gets bored of the status quo easily, and needs the rush of a new quest to keep them on their toes.

Spiritually, the Sagittarius archetype teaches us to cultivate our own personal relationship with the divine. Contrary to what most religions and a lot of spiritual teachers say, you don’t need an intermediary between you and Source/God/the Universe. You have that connection available to you at all times. Learning to tune in and trust that connection is where a lot of us seem to stumble, though.

This month, we also have a lunar eclipse, which will be visible in Australia, parts of the western US, western South America, and South-East Asia. Lunar eclipses can bring a sudden change or shift, or give rise to an urgent need to transform our lives in a new direction. Lunar eclipses can also help us to release things that no longer serve us.

The May 2021 full moon also highlights our feelings of self-worth and self-esteem. Our relationship to the things we value, the things we own, and the things we covet could come into sharp focus at this time.

What do we value and why. Who do we value. What do we want to pursue. These are some of the questions and themes that this Sagittarius full moon may stir up.

Astro-tarot influences for the May 2021 full moon

To throw some more light on the May full moon astrology, let’s take a look at the astro-tarot influences of this lunation. The Sagittarius full moon falls in decan 1, which is represented by the Eight of Wands. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with Temperance, which is associated with Sagittarius.

The 8 of Wands represents fast-moving energy and a flurry of creative inspiration. Under the influence of this card, things have a way of moving very fast. This could easily lead to burnout, and also to rushing in to situations or projects without due consideration. Temperance represents an inner stillness and balance. It carries a soothing and calming energy, and represents rest, healing, and rejuvenation.

This, then, speaks to tempering our creative fire. If you think about it from a metallurgy perspective, tempering is a process of honing metal by heating it to a very high temperature and then allowing it to cool. The process helps to toughen the metal by reducing its brittleness and internal stresses. The Japanese were masters of this art, using the process to make Samurai swords that are strong and flexible.

What this Sagittarius full moon highlights is the importance of the interplay between bursts of creative inspiration and periods of rest. For one, it prevents burnout. For another, it helps us gain perspective on what we are creating.

And yet, in a culture that focuses on productivity, rest is not something that is encouraged or modeled well.

How often do you allow yourself to just be? Or to luxuriate in a hobby that is purely for your own pleasure without thinking that you should be doing something “more productive” with your time.

And when that thought arises, have you ever stopped to think: more productive for whom? Benchmarking against what? And what does “more productive” even mean? And when will you have been “productive enough“?

This thinking also feeds into the idea that rest needs to be earned. But is that really true? Do you need to be close to burn out before you will give yourself the gift of rest?

If you have sacrificed all of your time at the altar of productivity, this lunar eclipse is likely to force you to stop and breathe. If you’ve been doing to opposite – all rest and no work, well – this Sagittarius full moon is going to make you examine what you’ve been avoiding.

Everything in moderation, folks! And yes I know – there are times when moderation is overrated and you need to go all-in on something. I get it. But you can still take small breaks. Mmmkay? Good!

Can I say, for the record, that I hate cricket? Cannot stand it. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s examine what this symbol means.

Cricket has long been known as the “gentleman’s game”, with rules that are respected and followed. Unlike the rough and tumble of American rugby and the penalties and Red Cards of football, cricket is a gentlemanly sport where the rules are not just observed, but also respected.

I see this as a nod to integrity and honesty….to true authenticity – beyond the buzzword.

Cricket is also a team sport – and one that encourages playing by the rules rather trying to win at any cost, which I think, also underlines the importance of maintaining your personal dignity – and integrity.

After all, how we play the game shows something of our character. How we lose, shows all of it.
