Tarot spread; astrology and tarot forecast; and ritual for the September 2026 new moon in Virgo

The September 2026 new moon falls in the sign of Virgo. The Virgo archetype is logical and practical, with an eye for detail and the steadfastness to go after their goals. This is a sign that thrives on meticulous planning, on honing skills to perfection and gaining mastery over their chosen vocation.

Spiritually, the Virgo archetype teaches the principle of devotion. One way to understand this principle is by looking at it through the lens of one’s devotion to their craft. While all the buzz seems to point towards profiting from your passion, there are numerous examples of famous writers and artists who held down a day job for most of their lives. Franz Kafka was an insurance clerk, Harper Lee was an airline ticketing agent, Mark Rothko was an elementary school teacher and Paul Gauguin was a stockbroker. They could all have given in to the dull drudgery of making a living, but they didn’t — and the world is much richer for their devotion to their craft.

This new moon is a potent time to plant new seeds, nurture cherished relationships, and potentially enter into collaborations or partnerships. It’s a time that is ripe for dream-weaving, for whispering your wishes into the ether, for laying the ground work for a cherished goal.

It’s also a great time to plan something that excites you, be it a workshop, an art project, or a weekend trip. If you’re looking for a promotion or pay raise at work, or even for a new job, this would be a good time to lay down the groundwork that would help you achieve the outcome you desire.

Astrology and tarot influences for the Virgo new moon

To throw some more light on the astrology of this new moon, let’s take a look at the astrology and tarot influences of this lunation. The Virgo new moon falls in decan 2, which is represented by the 9 of Pentacles. This is to be interpreted in conjunction with The Hermit, which is associated with Virgo.

The Daily Pause Oracle Deck

I designed this beautiful, 40-card oracle deck to bring in some stillness, to give us a word or an idea to reflect on as we go about our day.

Supported by the four elements – earth, air, fire, water – and a carefully thought-out structure that connects the cards, The Daily Pause oracle will help you to listen to and trust your own inner knowing.

There’s no learning curve involved with using this deck. Just get quiet, shuffle the cards, pull one out, and reflect on the word you’re presented with.

The first thing I notice with these cards is the position of the hands and the objects the two figures on these cards are holding. The woman on the 9 of Pentacles holds a falcon aloft on her hand, while the Hermit’s lamp illuminates the next few steps on his journey. There’s a sense of mastery here, of quiet contentment, of the wisdom of solitude and the satisfaction of achievement.

None of this comes easily to us. The path to mastery is often shrouded in mystery. We may know some of the steps to take on our journey, but it is only by the doing that we can get to where we want to be. There will always be twists and turns and forks on our path; obstacles that we need to navigate our way through. It requires a certain amount of tenacity and trust to get from where we are to where we want to be, and there are rarely any guarantees that we will reach our destination.

There are also times when, despite our best efforts, things don’t seem to work in our favor. The obstacles may be too difficult to overcome, life may throw us unexpected curveballs, we may be forced to change course. But even then, all we can do is pause, regroup, and take the next step that The Hermit’s lamp illuminates.

During this new moon, take stock of where you are with your goals or dreams for this year. Revisit your start-of-the-year journaling or your word of the year, if you had one. And then consider what you’d like to accomplish during the rest of the year.

With the moon sextile Mars, you may find that you have both the enthusiasm and the passion to really focus in on and work towards what’s important to you. Having a clear sense of direction, of where you want to go next, will help you to channel that energy in the right direction.

Ritual for the new moon in Virgo

For this new moon, I offer you a gentle ritual to work with the Hermit’s lamp.

The beautiful thing about the Hermit’s lamp, I think, is that it doesn’t show us the whole road. It just gives us enough light to illuminate our next few steps.

You will need:

A candle (or lamp, if you cannot safely burn a candle)

A journal and pen

Something to represent the goal or intention you want to work towards during the rest of the year. This could be a word, photograph, object, or even a tarot card that represents your intention.

The ritual:

Take stock of what you’ve built. In your journal, write down at least three things you’ve learned, developed, created, or become better at this year. They don’t have to be grand achievements. The small things that required patience, practice or perseverance count.

Then ask yourself: What do I know now that I didn’t know at the start of the year?

This is your accumulated light — the wisdom you’ve gathered by actually walking the path.

Now, light your candle or switch on a lamp.

Gently gaze into the flame for a few moments, reminding yourself that this is the light you carry with you.

Once you feel ready, get your journal again and answer this question:

What do I want this light to help me cultivate for the rest of the year?

Make a list, and then choose two things that feel the most worthy of your attention, effort, and care.

These are the main intentions you will focus on for the rest of the month or the year, depending on how big or small your intentions are.

Then choose a small practice for each of those intentions.

It might be:

  • spending an hour each week on something you want to learn
  • making something regularly
  • having a weekly date with a particular project
  • working out three times a week
  • cooking a meal from scratch at least twice a week

Remember: an intention without action is just a dream.

The goal of this ritual is to not just set an intention and forget it in a few days, but to work on it and achieve it. So choose your practice. Remember to make it small enough so that it is sustainable and meaningful enough that it builds up to something tangible over time.

To end the ritual, you can pencil in your practice in your planner for the rest of the month.
