As artists, when we create in a state of flow, it can feel like our paintbrush and our decisions are being guided by an unseen, unnamed force. The ancient Romans and Greeks had a name for this force — daemon or genius — you could also call them the muse.
Tune in as we talk about:
- The flow state when creating
- Where ideas come from
- What American poet Ruth Stone says about “catching poems”
- The strength — and bravery — of being open to the muses
- And much more!
“Where do your ideas come from? The ones that stop you In your tracks, that you scribble furiously because otherwise you will loose that idea? Why do you loose those lines of sheer poetry that took your breath away, if you don’t immediately write them down? When you’ve been painting in flow, without a thought, just following your impulse, and you look down at your painting, where did it come from?
Is it so difficult to believe that maybe, it was your muse who paid you a visit? Because it isn’t everyday that your creative sessions flow, that poetry spills from your nib.”

Wow, this is such an inspiring theme! Thank you for sharing 😀
This was awesome! I like the root of the word genius. Thanks for sharing Elizabeth Gilbert’s Ted talk.
Loved this, Shinjini, especially since you spokes so much about ‘flow’. Last month, I was struck by these words by Julia Cameron : When we pursue creative practices, we find ourselves experiencing more synchronicity. We’re often in the right place at the right time, we more open to that loving flow.
